A-wandering, a-wandering, a-wandering I'll go, But when I'm done I'll here return, for -- Avast! Second commoner Your wandering do assail, that this I'll take me. Mayhap 5 it is recompense for my beleaguerment. Third commoner It flies not the mark, methink. Second commoner Too sadly true. Fourth commoner The king, the king, I've caught him! Third commoner Hold up, you. The king is dead, or have you forgot? Has 10 your trade been quite poorly to your top, then? Fourth commoner No, in the window yonder! The king, I tell you, he walks anon! First commoner That be not the king, ye fool! That be the nobleman Armus. Second commoner The royal cuckold. Fourth commoner What of? Be the princess not honest then? 15 Second commoner Oh, nay, she's quite honest, but for one other. Fourth commoner I never heard of such in our lady. Who be the other? A foreigner, mayhap? First commoner A foreigner! Third commoner Only so much as a man's wond'ring be a foreigner, I wot. 20 Second commoner She be gi'en o'er to Armus, but her part do be promised to ambition, and she's lost her head to pride! Fourth commoner Then she be honest to Armus? Third commoner Methinks he knows not the cast 'tween his own and his workings... 25 First commoner Lilia be beholden to her own wants, these being what she cannot be given: to rule, and to be gi'en those powers of man. Her whimsy do escape her! Fourth commoner Then it be ill of her to ca'her dishonest. Second commoner Well, then she be as true as a woman e'er were. Has it 30 your true seal? Fourth commoner Avast! First commoner Avast, avast, you do me wrong, And so I'll tune this mournful song, That when all has been said and done -- 35 To me you'll 'mit your err. Second commoner Surely we've wronged God, that we've to 'mit this! First commoner Another day and I'll be off again, and twelvemoon be gone, so whether I ail you or not is small consequence, when you'll rid me by sun's remove. 40 Third commoner Oh, that he'd remove him now! First commoner Call me not, friend, I'll never reply you less you ask in song! Second commoner A curse, a curse, and canst I forget it, a curse! Fourth commoner Come then, if it be not the king I care me not. Canst we continue on the jour, or have you yet more to give? 45 Second commoner I be done for now. First commoner Anon I shall bewoe my fate, that ever we did meet, But now I'll take me softly, and I'll falsely smile sweet. --Ye daft fool! (commoners exit)
